The Society of the Irish Motor Industry reports that 121,195 new automobiles were purchased in 2024, reports RTE.
Comparing the number to 2023, there is a faint 1% decline.
Last year, there were 17,459 new electric car registrations, a 24% drop from the year before, reports RTE.
For 2024, gasoline was still the most widely used engine type, but over 45% of the market was made up of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Petrol – 30%
Diesel – 23%
Hybrid – 21%
Electric – 14%
Plug-in Hybrid – 10%
The market share of manual transmissions has decreased to 33.80%, while automatic transmissions currently hold 66% of the market, according to SIMI’s official statistics, reports RTE.
In 2024, the hatchback will still be the most popular automobile body style in Ireland. However, for the eighth consecutive year, grey has maintained its position as the best-selling shade.
“The new car market in 2024 was in line with the previous year, with new car registrations finishing at 121,195 units, slightly behind 2023,” said Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General, reports RTE.
“There has however been some tentative signs of a turnaround in EV sales towards the end of 2024, and the industry is anticipating an increase in EV sales in 2025. The start of the new registration period, 251, this week, is an optimistic time for the Irish Motor Industry. With the variety of incentives and offers from retailers and manufacturers it is a good time for customers to shop for a new or used car,” reports RTE.
