Employers to be hit with hefty fines if found guilty of falsely marking employees as self employed

Companies who are found guilty of falsely marking employees as self employed could soon be hit with hefty fines under new proposals outlined by the Government.

According to The Sunday Business Post, employers who falsely mark their employees as self employed could face fines of up to €25,000 if they are found guilty in a court of law.

It is believed that fine increases are being introduced to stop employers from dodging paying their employees PRSI and offering them holiday and sick pay.

Under the new proposals which is thought to be targeted at a number of sectors including the construction and gig sectors, the Department of Social Protection is to increase the number of inspectors.

It is believed that the state is losing hundreds of millions of euros due to the ongoing issue.
