It is understood that Enda Kenny tendered his resignation at Áras an Uachtaráin shortly after 10pm, thus becoming acting Taoiseach and head of a caretaker government, in accordance with the Constitution.

Neither himself, Micheal Martin, or Richard Boyd Barrett received enough support to become the new Taoiseach today.

Mr. Kenny said that he was fully committed to ensure the people get a government they “need and deserve and have given their verdict on”.

The Dáil will now adjurn until March 22.
