Labour’s catastrophic results at the General Election have sounded the death knell for both the party and its leader, Tanaiste Joan Burton.
Though she just about managed to hold on to her seat, a recent poll carried out by Amárach Research has returned a 63% of people who believe she must step down as Labour leader. In a striking twist, 67% of people polled in her native Dublin support a ‘go’ motion.
The Labour party may even lose its speaking rights in the Dáil, as it currently has six TDs -seven is the minimum-. One Labour TD, Willie Penrose, is still pending to know if he can retain his seat in the Longford-Westmeath constituency. If he does, Labour will have the seven required TDs.
