The energy credit is expected to be included in the budget as part of the cost-of-living package, according to Minister of Finance Jack Chambers, reports RTE.
Mr. Chambers added that tax adjustments in the next budget will benefit the typical worker to the tune of almost €1,000.
He stated that while many parts of the budget have been agreed upon, there are still other issues that need to be resolved with party leaders.
He acknowledged that he is aware of the strain that people are still under, especially given the rising expense of living.
But he said that there is still need for one and that energy costs still require help.
“I do not expect the cost of living package to be the same scale as last year,” he said, as inflation has moderated, reports RTE.
He said: “I think energy credits can play a really important role to protect people and families through the winter period. And I think that will be a component of our cost of living package,” reports RTE.
According to Mr. Chambers, a significant income tax package will be included in the budget, and USC will play a key role in reducing the tax burden that some employees must bear.
The Dublin West TD stated that while further investments in housing, healthcare, and education may be made, he wanted to ensure that choices could be maintained over the medium-to-long term in order to mitigate long-term economic threats, reports RTE.
He acknowledged that small and medium-sized firms have significant financial challenges and stressed the need for policymakers to avoid placing them in an unfavourable financial position.
He stated: “I think it’s better to give certainty on costs and sustainability on on businesses cost base,” reports RTE.
“We want to use it carefully and look to the long term,” he added, reports RTE.
When the election is held, Minister of Finance Jack Chambers expressed confidence that Fianna Fáil will convey its message.
He stated that the government is still dedicated to serving out its whole term and has a great deal of work ahead of it on RTÉ’s Today With Claire Byrne.
“I expect the election to be in the spring,” he stated, “but I am never fearful of facing the public”, reports RTE.
