Attempts to erect a public sculpture Puca statue in Ennistymon have been rejected outright by the community, who have voted against the controversial statue.

According to RTE, the proposal was divisive ever since it was first proposed in May 2021.  Since then, social media exploded in horror, with users describing the sculpture as “ugly”, “hideous” and “a monstrosity.”  Others said that it was “offensive, frightening, grotesque,” and completely out of keeping with the picturesque locality of Ennistymon.

The local authorities were then obliged to put the matter to a vote in the community when it was completely rejected.

Many think that the fact that the Puca has always been known as a pagan symbol that brings bad luck is one of the main reasons why the local community have said they do not want it playing any part in the town of Ennistymon.

The Council has now said that it will try to offload the statue on some other part of County Clare although it remains to be seen whether any community will want a statue of something that has a long-standing reputation of bringing bad luck with it.
