Despite initially disapproving of Enoch Burke’s long-running protest, an Irish priest has called on Catholics to “stop laughing” at him and acknowledged that his sympathy for the fired schoolteacher has grown.

Fr. Brendan Kilcoyne questioned whether Mr. Burke had been correct and he had been mistaken, and he said that the evangelical Christian who was teaching him had “shamed” Catholics with his tough attitude.

“From the beginning, I felt that Enoch could have dealt differently with the issue in the school; dealt with the principal differently. But he is right,” said Fr Kilcoyne, who is the parish priest in Balla, Co Mayo.

“There is a huge problem if you’re teaching [about transgenderism] in a Christian school. There is a huge problem if you are acknowledging alleged gender transformation, gender transition in a Christian school,” he added.

Fr. Kilcoyne stated that at first, he thought Mr. Burke might have reframed his objection and his family could have handled the matter better, especially when the courts were disrespected.

Additionally, he believed that Mr. Burke should not have persisted in attending his old Westmeath school, but he expressed growing compassion “because of his persistent personal witness and the appalling price he’s paying for it.”

“I must acknowledge that, if I am right in this, that I am being taught by him. I must acknowledge that as a matter of honesty,” Fr Kilcoyne added on an episode of his podcast, The Brendan Option, reports The Mirror.

“I was outraged by his behaviour, the behaviour of his family in court. Now, I’m beginning to wonder that, if they sincerely believe that the courts are applying an unjust law, what choice does a citizen have?” he asked, rt

“I am the most innocuous, harmless little creature you can imagine… but I am seriously beginning to wonder whether I was not wrong and Enoch right – that’s where I am now,” reports The Mirror.

Mr. Burke was released from Mountjoy Prison on December 20. He had been imprisoned there for disobeying High Court instructions to avoid his previous workplace at Wilson’s Hospital School.

He presently owes €193,000 in fines for violating that order, and if he keeps going to school when it reopens next week, he will be subject to a higher charge of €1,400 each day, reports The Mirror.
