ESB crews are currently working to restore electricity to over 100,000 households and businesses that lost power due to Storm Darragh, while local authorities are clearing roads of fallen trees and debris, reports RTE.
According to the ESB, approximately 120,000 customers are experiencing power outages.
This morning, the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM), Met Éireann, and other organizations gathered to discuss the effects of Storm Darragh.
The NDFEM indicated that there has been considerable disruption to the electricity supply across the nation, with a more significant effect than that of Storm Ophelia, and that restoration is expected to take multiple days, reports RTE.
The NDFEM noted that ESB teams are working to repair the network damage with support from the Defence Forces.
At the peak of the storm, roughly 400,000 homes and businesses lost power.
Northern Ireland Electricity Networks (NIE Networks) reported that an initial assessment of damage by its engineers suggested that restoration work would extend into tomorrow, reports RTE.
Mobile and broadband provider, eir, stated that Donegal and Mayo experienced the most extensive outages, though disruptions were felt across the country.
“It has been reported that more than 35,000 broadband issues, 20,000 fixed voice problems, and around 15% of mobile network site outages have been logged,” it added, reports RTE.
This follows the occurrence of very strong and gusty northwest winds in Munster and Connacht.
Met Éireann noted gusts reaching 141km/h at Ceann Mhása in County Galway at 11pm last night, while gusts of 120km/h were recorded at Shannon, County Clare, and gusts of 115km/h were observed in County Cork, reports RTE.
Status Red warnings that were active for Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo, Galway, Clare, and Wicklow ended during the night.
A Status Orange wind warning for the country came to an end at 10am and was succeeded by a Status Yellow wind warning, which concluded at 3pm.
A Status Yellow rain warning for Connacht and the counties of Clare, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Longford, Louth, Meath, and Westmeath also expired at 10am, reports RTE.
