Estimated €200 MILLION in taxpayer money to be spent on Direct Provision in Ireland in 2020

The cost to the taxpayer of running and maintaining Direct Provision Centres is estimated to be more than double what was allocated to the service in the 2020 budget with the rise largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic the precautions that must be taken due to the disease.

The Irish Examiner reported that €80.6m was allocated to providing Direct Provision to asylum seekers under the heading of “International Protection Accommodation” but the real cost of the DP system is estimated to be as high as €200m for the year.

That’s an extra €120m in taxpayer money that will be spent on housing and providing for alleged refugees at a time when the country faces the worst recession in its history and a large portion of the population still face a precarious situation in regards to their employment.
