A leading virology expert has urged parents to wash their children’s lunch boxes when they return to school as the Covid-19 virus is thought to live longer on plastic surfaces.
Speaking on RTE Radio One’s Today with Sarah McInerney, Trinity College Assistant Professor of Virology Kim Roberts said that parents should be more concerned with items such as lunchboxes rather than uniforms.
Prof Roberts told the programme that although the transmission rate is low, their is a slight risk that the virus could live on surfaces of such items.
Roberts advised parents to make sure that all plastic products such and drinks bottles are washed every day and items such as pencils and pens are labelled.
The virology expert said schools will be looking for equipment to be labelled as it will be encouraged that students don’t share items such as pens and pencils in class.
She added that items such as lunchboxes and drinks bottles can be washed with normal washing up liquid, whilst uniforms should be washed at 60C using normal detergent.
