EU bans certain chemical commonly used in cough syrups due to the presence of potential allergen

The EU has banned a chemical commonly used in cough syrups due to potential allergic reactions.

The allergen in question is a chemical called pholcodine, which has been found to be linked to anaphylactic shock if taken 12 months before someone is put under general anesthetic.

Some syrups used to treat dry cough contain this chemical.
