EU is looking to keep calm amid US tariff instability, says Martin

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has urged the European Union to remain calm in the face of uncertainty surrounding its trading relationship with the United States, following recent developments in the transatlantic tariff dispute, reports Breaking News.

Speaking at the Ógra Fianna Fáil National Youth Conference in Co Roscommon on Saturday evening, Mr Martin emphasized his government’s commitment to protecting jobs in Ireland, particularly as many younger members of his party are employed in sectors that could be directly impacted by the trade tensions.

The EU had been preparing trade countermeasures in response to a new wave of US tariffs, but has since stepped back after President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on the proposed measures — including tariffs aimed at the European bloc, reports Breaking News.

Acknowledging that Ireland and the EU were facing “turbulent times,” the Taoiseach called for composure and strategic thinking as the situation develops.

His comments come amid broader concerns about the fragility of international trade relationships and their potential to disrupt Ireland’s export-driven economy.

“I know that the current uncertainty around tariffs and the chaos and confusion around our and Europe’s relationship with the US is a source of great worry for many. I know that there will be a good proportion of you here tonight who work with companies who stand to be directly impacted by this uncertainty,” reports Breaking News.

“What I would say to you is that you are citizens of a country whose government is absolutely committed to protecting our economic model, protecting jobs and investing in the infrastructure we need to ensure the progress we have enjoyed can continue to be enjoyed by the coming generations. We are working closely with our European counterparts to ensure that we keep things calm and navigate our way through this. We will continue to engage with the US administration and with the many companies, multinational, indigenous in our country,” reports Breaking News.
