Euro 2016: Alcohol banned around stadiums and fanzones

A complete ban on alcohol around stadiums and fanzones has just been announced by the French Government, in the wake of severe street violence ahead of the first games in the tournament.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said “I have asked for all necessary measures to be taken to prohibit the sale, consumption and transport of alcoholic drinks in sensitive areas on match days and the day before, and on days when fanzones are open,” .

The move follows three days of alcohol-fuelled violence among football supporters around the streets of Marseille, which left over 30 people injured-some of them critically-, and prompted UEFA to threaten sanctions for both England and Russia.
