The European Commission has declared war on Ireland by saying that “Ireland does not enjoy an exemption from the obligation under EU law for a system of water charges.”
The confirmation is likely to severely limit the Government’s discretion to scrap water charges after all.
This could actually lead to Ireland facing a procedure in the coming months that could lead to daily fines due to the Government’s breach of EU law.
The commission said that “flexibility” on water charges afforded to Ireland no longer applies and that there must be a payment system.
No wonder it now looks likely that the UK are going to exit the EU.
