Officials confirmed that British nurse Lucy Letby had filed a formal application to challenge her conviction, reports RTE.

Staff at the Court of Appeal said they had received an application for leave to appeal.

Letby, 33, was jailed for life after a jury found him guilty of the murders of seven children and the attempted murders of six other children in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016.

The UK Department of Health previously said there would be an independent inquiry into Letby’s case which would examine “the circumstances surrounding the deaths and incidents – including how concerns raised by clinicians were dealt with”, reports RTE.

Generally, applications for leave to appeal against Crown Court decisions are heard by judges without a hearing.

If refused, citizens have the right to renew their offer for a permit in a full court hearing before two or three judges.

In 2015 and 2016, the hospital saw a significant increase in the number of children who suffered serious and unexpected falls.

The unit’s head consultant first mentioned Letby’s presence to senior management in late June 2015, when the collapse occurred.

Concerns about the defendant had grown among some consultants and were raised with hospital governors during the hearing at Manchester Crown Court over his further unexplained and unusual collapse.

However, Letby was not removed from the unit until two triplets died and another baby boy collapsed for three consecutive days in June 2016, reports RTE.

She was limited to office work but registered a grievance procedure which was resolved in her favor and she was scheduled to return to the unit in March 2017.

This step was taken only after the hospital management contacted the police.
