Extraordinarily insensitive: Fine Gael’s Catherine Noone’s candidacy “all but over” as she apologises for calling Leo Varadkar autistic

It’s a sad state of affairs in 2020 when the extremely important condition known as autism is thrown around in a derogatory way.

Fine Gael’s Senator Catherine Noone has brought even more shame to the Fine Gael campaign by being forced to apologise for calling the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar autistic.

It’s understood that Noone initially denied using the term but a recording proved otherwise and she had to make an apology.

Varadkar accepted the apology and will not suspend Noone from the party, but many people with disabilities, groups fighting stigma and even those with autism themselves have called for Noone to be sanctioned over her remarks.

The Liberal spoke with one mother today whose autistic child is awaiting speech theory:
“What Catherine Noone said with her throwaway remark is exactly what our community is doing to try and stop this stigma. She should stand down, be stood down or see no one voting for her whatsoever on February 8th. I imagine her campaign is all but over”.

No doubt this remake will have absolutely devastating effects on Catherine Noone’s hopes of becoming a TD.
