The family belonging to one half of a Co Meath couple who went missing almost two months ago believe they may have been murdered by a criminal drug gang.

The claim comes as William Maughan and his Latvian partner Anna Varslavane have been missing since April, they couple were last seen in Gormanston on April 14th. The news comes as their disappearance was reconstructed on RTE’s Crimecall last Monday night. According to reports Mr Maughin’s family claim they have received information that could lead to finding the couple’s remains. It is understood that Mr Maughin’s family received a call from Ms Varslavane on the day in question, where she was heard crying “help, help, help”. The distraught family member went onto say that they heard the sound of choking down during the call, along with voices in the background which they did not recognise.

It is believed that the harrowing phone call was made just minutes before the couple were due to meet up with Mr Maughan’s mother but they never arrived.
Although the Gardaí say they are still running a missing persons investigation, and have refused to release any information on whether they believe the couple have been murdered. However according to a report issued in the Irish Independent, it is believed detectives have received “reliable intelligence” that the couple were murdered by five members of a drug gang and the ringleader is already the prime suspect for another killing in the area.

Mr Maughan’s father, Joseph, told the newspaper his son “knew something that he should not have known” He went onto say: “We know that they are both gone and just want them back so that we can give them a Christian funeral.”
