The High Court has heard that the family of a young child with substantial autism has not been able to locate an appropriate primary school placement for her, reports Breaking News.
In an effort to get their daughter placed in an appropriate primary school, the girl’s family has filed judicial review proceedings in the High Court against the Attorney General, the National Council for Special Education, Ireland, and the Minister of Education and Skills.
According to Brendan Hennessy Bl, who spoke on behalf of the family, the youngster is in a pre-school environment, which makes them extremely happy, reports Breaking News.
However, the family has contacted around 20 different schools in search of a placement for the daughter and is searching for a primary school setting.
Counsel stated that none of the petitions had been approved.
The youngster has “very profound” autism, and the court heard that her demands in terms of schooling and health are extremely complicated.
Even though she made wonderful development at her preschool, according to counsel, her family is afraid that if they are unable to find her a spot for the upcoming school year that starts in September, all might be lost and she could regress, reports Breaking News.
The youngster is nonverbal, has a tendency to self-harm, and her educational performance lags much below that of her peers.
Counsel warned that if there is any more delay in getting the kid placed in school, it will “likely have significant and severe consequences for the child” and she may fall much farther behind.
Counsel stated that the Minister and the other State respondents have been informed of the circumstances and that her family has not been successful in getting her admitted to school, reports Breaking News.
Although the family has not heard back in a significant way, they are reportedly optimistic that she will be given a seat.
The girl is seeking an order forcing the Minister to provide her with an adequate and appropriate school education, in the form of a full-time school placement, in these proceedings, which are being taken on her behalf as a last resort, reports Breaking News.
