It has come to light that the roof of a €1.4 million security hut next to the Government Buildings cost more than €60,000, reports Breaking News.
The cost of the notable feature—which has drawn comparisons to the haircut of former US President Donald Trump—was made public in recently released Office of Public Works (OPW) data.
When it was discovered that the security hut next to Government Buildings cost €1.4 million, while construction to create a bike shed on the grounds of Leinster House cost €336,000, there was a general outcry.
According to a chart detailing the project’s total expenses, the pavilion building alone cost 283,231 euros in total, with €110,094 going towards site improvements including roadways and drainage, reports Breaking News.
The amount spent on mechanical, electrical, and security systems exceeded half a million euros. This includes €143,000 for gates, turnstiles, anti-ramming structures, and barriers, and €150,000 for security systems including CCTV and access control.
The entire cost of the project’s interim security measures came to €190,000, reports Breaking News.
“Acknowledging the public concern and political scrutiny about the high costs” of the project is how the OPW put it.
The organisation expressed its dissatisfaction and rage over the project’s cost and stated that the Government Buildings complex’s vulnerabilities were discovered during a security evaluation conducted by gardaí, which informed the project’s design and execution.
The OPW said: “This security facility is the main access point for vehicles accessing the campus and is the vetting area for several critical locations within the complex. This is a critical piece of infrastructure for the essential security of the Government buildings complex. It commenced on site in August 2023 and was completed in February 2024,” reports Breaking News.
