A widespread search has taken place off the coast of Long Beach in New York after an Irishman went missing whilst swimming in the early hours of Monday morning.
It is reported the man who has since been named as Niall Gibbons 31, went missing whilst he was swimming with friends in the area at approximately 2am on Monday morning.
Police investigating the incident say the group who got into difficulties whilst swimming thankfully managed to make it back to the shoreline, however tragically Mr Gibbons was reported missing shortly afterwards.
Although a 650 mile search operation was carried out by the US Coast Guard, authorities say it has since been suspended as waters in the search area are highly dangerous.
