A female prison officer had to be taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation in Cloverhill Prison on Tuesday.
It is understood that the officer intervened to break up a fight between inmates, when one of them suddenly turned on her.
The injuries are believed to be serious, but not life-threatening.
Gardai have now become involved and are investigating the incident.
