Fianna Fail TD claims proposed EU hate speech laws will silence and criminalise his political opponents on issues of transgenderism, immigration and gender

A Fianna Fail TD for Co. Clare, Cathal Crowe used Dail privilege to launch an attack on his political opponents this month.

During a debate on proposed new European Commission “hate speech” laws, Crowe said “There is a political party that does not yet have a seat in this chamber, the Irish Freedom Party,” he said. “It practises hate
messaging, and it is how it operates. Its members message on topics of gender, transgender and immigration. They are the issues on which they campaign.”

According to THETIMES.CO.UK, Crowe claimed Irish Freedom Party had no mandate in Ireland. “If its members (IFP) believe they have a right to speech, they will have less of a right to make their statements when we
sign up to this [European Commission proposal], because any form of rallying people or inciting hatred in that regard will be illegal,” the TD added.

It has since transpired that the Irish Freedom Party’s Chairperson Michael Leahy, who works as a planning consultant in Clare, submitted an objection against the Fainna Fail TD’s plans to Clare county council a
week earlier.

Leahy was acting on behalf of a neighbour, Matthew Broggy of Meelick, Co. Clare reports THETIMES.CO.UK. Both neighbours have been in a dispute for more than forty years over the building of a house.

The Fianna Fail TD is no stranger to controversy. According to the ClareEcho, in September 2020 he was criticised for “reckless contribution” in the Dail when he labelled the conduct of young people as “almost treasonous”.
