Final curtain call for the Capitol cinema in Cork

The iconic Capitol cinema, sited in Cork’s Grand Parade, is no more. What was left of the building has been demolished, to make way for a new €50m re-development.

The Capitol first opened its doors as a movie screen back in 1947, becoming the first multi-sceen cinema outside of Dublin in 1989. It shut for the last time in 2005, and the building has remained vacant since.

Today, the remnants of the landmark site have been demolished, and the site will soon be transformed into retail space. The construction phase will support about 200 construction jobs, with an opening of Christmas 2016 envisaged for the revamped locale.
