Night-time violence in French cities has halved in 24 hours, the Home Office said, a week after riots broke out after a teenager was killed by police during a traffic stop, reports RTE.

Overnight, 72 people were arrested across the country, including 24 in and around Paris, and 24 buildings were burned down or damaged, it said.

A statement said 159 vehicles were set on fire and 202 fires started in dustbins or elsewhere in public spaces.

Four police or gendarmerie offices were attacked, but no one was injured.

Police mobilization remained at the same level as the previous two nights, at 45,000 across France.

The government has been battling unrest and looting since 17-year-old Nahel M. was killed by an officer during a traffic stop on the outskirts of Paris last Tuesday, reigniting allegations of systemic racism among security forces, reports RTE.

Yesterday’s demonstrations calling for a “return to republican order” came after the home of the mayor of a Paris suburb was rammed by a burning car, sparking widespread outrage.

A total of 157 people were arrested in the night from Sunday to Monday, which is a significant decrease compared to the number of those arrested the night before.

President Emmanuel Macron will meet with the mayors of 220 communities damaged in the riots.

Mr Macron hopes to “start the painstaking, long-term work needed to understand the profound reasons that led to these events”, an official at the president’s office said, reports RTE.
