
The Government has signed off on new legislation that will allow customers to cancel their phone and broadband contracts if prices are increased, reports Breaking News.
Providers will now be required to give advance warning before any price change, and must allow customers to leave their contracts without penalty, reports Breaking News.
Most consumers face at least one price rise every year, with some increases reaching three per cent plus inflation.
Minister for Communications Patrick O’Donovan said the growth in charges has been gradual, reports Breaking News.
“It’s quite unfair to consumers, they aren’t even aware in many cases that they are paying it. It’s small money in terms of subtle increases per annum. A lot of people don’t even change mobile providers from year to year, so over the number of years it’s a substantial increase, and as I said a while ago… if you multiply it out over the population, it’s a lot of money,” reports Breaking News.
