Fine Gael is a tried and tested party in Government, says Varadkar who’ll be Taoiseach again next month

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said his presentation to voters at tomorrow’s Fine Gael Ard Fheis will be that it is a proven party in government, capable of dealing with crises, no matter what challenge arises.

Speaking to reporters in Athlone tonight, he said: “It’s a party you can trust in difficult times. And a party which can give you the security in difficult times to know that your job, your business, your livelihood will be protected at all costs,” reports RTE.

He said he “absolutely” acknowledges and “wouldn’t deny it for a second” that the country faces “enormous challenges” in areas such as housing, health and justice.

However, Varadkar said the public will also recognize that there has been “tremendous progress” from mass unemployment and emigration 12 years ago when Fine Gael entered government, to full employment today.

He cited a recent United Nations Development Program report that ranks Ireland eighth on the list of the best countries in the world to live.

Varadkar said: “We aspire, of course, to be number one… but coming in the top ten, of 200 countries, isn’t a bad place to be,” reports RTE.

Varadkar will replace Taoiseach Micheál Martin under the terms of the deal that brought together Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens to form a government following the latest general election in January 2020.

He said he learned after 12 years in government that you don’t know what’s going to hit you, referring to the war in Ukraine, the coronavirus pandemic, Brexit and the global financial crisis.
