fine Gael’s Regina Doherty: Covid-19 payments won’t be sustained at current level indefinitely

Those who’ve been receiving €350 per week since the coronavirus outbreak began have been warned that the payment won’t be ongoing indefinitely and that the government will ease it at a point in the future should the lockdown measures persist and stop work from commencing.

The Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty has warned that the current Covid-19 payments will not be sustained at the current rate indefinitely.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Drivetime programme, Doherty said that although Ireland will continue to offer the payment at the current rate for as long as possible she stated that changes will most likely have to be made in the future.

Doherty said Ireland can sustain the payment as long as we can borrow at the level we are currently borrowing at.

However she stated that the current rate of borrowing won’t last forever and therefore changes will be made.

The social protection minister added that certain sectors will have to be given supports as they won’t be able to bounce back from the outbreak immediately.
