An elderly fisherman in his 80s who had been reported missing overnight on Lough Corrib has been found safe and unharmed, reports RTE.
It’s believed the man had gone out alone in a small boat from Golden Bay, located between Cong and Corr na Móna on the Mayo-Galway border, yesterday.
Concerns were raised by a family member last night when the fisherman, reportedly from the Claremorris area of Mayo, did not return home as expected, reports RTE.
The Irish Coast Guard stated it was alerted to the incident shortly before 11pm.
Rescue helicopters Rescue 116 from Sligo and Rescue 115 from Shannon were dispatched to search the lake, assisted by the Corrib Community Rescue Boat.
The search was paused just after 4am this morning but resumed at first light, supported by Irish Coast Guard units from Cleggan and Costello Bay, along with local fishermen and their boats, reports RTE.
In a statement, the Irish Coast Guard said: “Following the resumption of the search at first light, shortly afterwards the missing person was located safe and well.”
The Coast Guard also noted that search operations have now concluded, reports RTE.
“The Irish Coast Guard wishes to thank all personnel involved in this successful search,” the statement added, reports RTE.
Gardaí, who participated in the operation, confirmed that the missing fisherman was found safe and well on Lough Corrib earlier today.
They also said the man has been brought to hospital for medical evaluation, reports RTE.
