Five die in mountaineering accident in Austria

Five people have been killed, and another one injured, after a group of climbers fell off a mountain in the Austrian state of Salzburg earlier today.

It is understood that a group of people were climbing in the Mannlkarscharte area of the Zillertal Alps range, about 2,000m above sea level.

A witness said that the five were roped together. One of the climbers appeared to slip on ice and fell, dragging the rest to their deaths. A sixth climber is believed to be injured in hospital.

Fatalities are common in the area, with several dozen climbers perishing in the rough terrain every year.
