2000 small animals culled in pet shops in Hong Kong as part of “precautionary measures” in case they pass Covid on to humans

As countries start to move forward with their plans to lift Covid restrictions, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has insisted that the pandemic is still very much ongoing.

According to RTE, attention is now being turned towards infection in animals, with researchers in South Africa considering whether big cats in zoos such as lions may have caught the virus.

Questions are also being asked about hamsters in Hong Kong as to whether they have the ability to catch the virus and pass it on to humans.  As a safety precaution, 2000 small animals were culled in pet shops after several hamsters in a shop were thought to have contracted the virus.  The move, which has caused outrage among the public, was justified by the country’s Health Secretary Sophia Chan, who described it as one of the country’s “precautionary measures” even though she acknowledged that there is no evidence to show that pets can transmit the virus to humans.
