Forever Neutral: A number of TD’s call for a referendum to be held to guarantee Ireland’s neutral status remains in place

A number of sitting TDs have issued a call for the new government to hold a referendum that would guarantee the would remain neutral during any worldwide conflicts.

The cal is being sphere headed by independent TD’s Mick Wallace and Clare Daly, who cllaim there widespread public support for the proposal, after they conducted a recent opinion poll. The latest poll carried out by Red C reportedly shows that 57% of Irish people support the proposal that a referendum should be held, in order to put a clause on neutrality into the constitution.

According to Clare Daly TD the country would not suffer any to business should the state stop U.S. planes in Shannon, Ms Daly said: “If we did I think it would be a price willing to pay, but no we don’t accept that that is the case. “There’s no evidence really to support that view at all.

“The multinationals that are here are here to make money, and whether Shannon is used by the US military or not they’ll continue to stay here as long as they make money, that’s what motivates them.”
