Forging ahead: Sinn Fein already begin discussions with a number of Independent TD’s to form a government, as Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael continue to dither

With Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil seemingly dithering over the prospect of forming an uneasy alliance in the next Dáil, it seems that Sinn Féin will not hang around as the party have already begun in-depth talks with a number of independent TDs about potentially forming a new government.

However the party has once again ruled out the possibility of entering into a coalition with either Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil. The news comes after the party’s deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald, said even if either of the two main political parties proposed a programme in which Sinn Féin would support them, Sinn Fein would point blank refuse their proposals.

Ms McDonald also said now is the time to scrap water charges, by saying the people have spoken and have to be heard. Ms McDonald told reporters: “If Fianna Fáil think that they are going to cod anybody, that they are the party who initiated water charges, have suddenly come to some conversion in their views, they are not going to convince anyone of that and likewise Fine Gael.” “What has happened here, is that the people have spoken.”
