Former Sunderland and England star facing prison after being found guilty of having sexual activity with a minor

It has been reported in the past hour that former Sunderland and England footballer Adam Johnson has been found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a 15 year old girl.

Johnson who was only released from Sunderland just last month was found guilty after he previously admitted to grooming the girl and one charge of sexual activity but denied two more extremely serious counts. The disgraced star was found guilty by jury at Bradford Crown Court of one count of sexual activity with a minor, but was not guilty of a second charge of sexual activity. The judge in the trial has now warned Johnson a prison sentence is almost inevitable.

The court heard details of how Johnson and the young girl met on 30 January 2015 after agreeing to sign football shirts for her. The player admitted kissing the teenager but told the jury the encounter in his Range Rover “went no further”. Although the girl told the court the former Sunderland star “put his hands down her pants” as she performed an oral sex act on him. However the jury found Johnson not guilty on the oral sex charge but guilty by a majority verdict of 10-2 on a charge of sexual touching.

Johnson is expected in court later this week for a sentencing hearing.
