The former Manchester City and Real Madrid footballer Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of rape.

Robinho who currently plays for Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil was found guilty of sexual assault at an Italian court on Thursday.

The ex City star who is yet to appeal his sentence could spend the best part of the  next decade behind bars if his appeals process fails next month.

According to Italian media the Brazilian allegedly raped a 22 year old woman back in 2013 whilst he was playing for AC Milan.

It is alleged the footballer who became Manchester City’s record signing back in 2008 when he moved from Real Madrid for a fee worth £32.2m, was part a group of five men who raped the woman at hotel following a night out in the city.

Italian state media say the other four men have been given lengthy prison sentences for their part in the assault.
