Crunch talks set for later today as the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin agree to meet

According to reports this afternoon the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will meet his opposite number Michael Martin later today.

It is expected  the two party leaders will hold a meeting to discuss the future of the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald.

The pair will formally hold discussions after Mr Martin’s party issued a statement this morning declaring that the Fianna Fáil party has no confidence in the former justice minister’s abilities within the Dáil.

It is understood the the talks will be held in order to arrange a quick solution to the crisis which comes after Ms Fitzgerald allegedly covered up her involvement in the Maurice McCabe whistle-blower fiasco.

Fianna Fáil say they do not want to force another General Election but they do believe it is time for Ms Fitzgerald to step down from her position.

The Tánaiste has been given a deadline until Tuesday to tender her resignation.
