Former RTE star severely injured in horror crash with wife and daughter

Former RTÉ star Gareth O’Callaghan remains in hospital after a “very serious crash” in Cork city.

The radio DJ star suffered several broken bones and a punctured lung after the collision at Horgan’s Quay last Sunday.

Thankfully he is now on the mend, although he is receiving treatment at CUH, Corkbio reports.

Four cars were involved in the crash and there was a multi-agency response involving the National Ambulance Service, Gardaí and the Cork City Fire Brigade, reports The Mirror.

A man and woman in their 40s were treated at the scene, while Gareth and a young woman were taken to CUH.

The 62-year-old was driving along the pier when another vehicle rear-ended him.

His wife Paula and daughter Emma were both in the car at the time and managed to free themselves.

He was then pulled from the vehicle after Hero’s firefighters cut through the roof to free him.

He thanked everyone who came to his aid and said he would take a break from the radio until he recovered.

He shared a photo of the scene where the emergency services are coming to his aid of him.

He said: “I had to postpone my birthday today as I have been in Cork University Hospital since last Sunday following a very serious car crash. Thankfully Paula and Emma who managed to get free from the wreckage are recovering at home from bad bruising and shock. We were in heavy, slow-moving traffic on Horgan’s Quay at 2.45pm when a car smashed directly into the back of ours, destroying it in seconds,” reports The Mirror.

Gardai confirmed they witnessed the crash with a spokesperson: “Gardaí attended a four vehicle RTC that occurred on Horgan’s Quay, Cork, on Sunday 12th March 2023. A female and male in their 40s were treated at the scene while a male in his 60s and a female youth were taken to Cork University Hospital to be treated for their injuries,” reports The Mirror.
