France heightens New Year’s Eve security, with almost 100,000 police officers mobilised

According to domestic intelligence chief Celine Berthon, there will be heavy security throughout France on New Year’s Eve, with 90,000 law enforcement officers expected to be deployed, reports Breaking News.

Six thousand of those will be in Paris, where over 1.5 million people are anticipated to attend festivities on the Champs-Elysees, according to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

Mr. Darmanin mentioned a “very high terrorist threat” because, in part, of “what is happening in Israel and Palestine”, reports Breaking News.

Tens of thousands of firefighters and five thousand soldiers would also be deployed, according to Mr. Darmanin, who also announced that police would be authorised to use drones for the first time in their security operations.
