France sends navy ship to support Gaza hospitals

French President Emmanuel Macron said he thought it would be an “error” for Israel to carry out a “massive ground intervention” in Gaza, although Macron reiterated Israel’s right to self-defense.

“France recognises Israel’s right to defend itself. Regarding a ground intervention, if is entirely targeted against terrorist groups, that is a choice that it has, but if it is a massive operation that would endanger civilian populations, in that case I think it would be an error for Israel,” Mr Macron told reporters in Egypt, reports RTE.

Mr Macron added that a total of 31 French citizens were killed in Hamas attacks in Israel earlier this month.

An ActionAid Palestine representative said that humanitarian aid and basic goods such as food, medical supplies, fuel and water are blocked in Gaza.

Riham Jafari, RTÉ’s drive-thru support co-ordinator, said: “There is a human catastrophe in Gaza, and there are 18 days of continuous bombing and continuous targeting for Mosques, for houses, for hospitals, for health facilities. The hospitals in Gaza will stop their operation within the upcoming 24 hours due to the lack of electricity and lack of fuel. There is no safe place for people to go in Gaza.”

Israel has agreed to delay an expected attack on Gaza for now so the United States can move missile defence systems to the region to protect U.S. troops there, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing U.S. and Israeli officials.

According to the WSJ, U.S. officials have so far convinced Israel to hold off until the United States deploys air defence systems to the region later this week.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was cancelling plans to visit Israel because of the “inhumane” war against Hamas militants in Gaza.
