French church attack update: One of the assailants was on probation, and was fitted with an electronic tag

It has emerged this evening that one of the men who took part in the brutal murder of an elderly priest inside a French church this morning was on probation, and also fitted with an electronic tag.

This man has been identified as 19-year-old Adel Kermiche, who was supposed to be under close watch by authorities because of two prior attempts to reach Syria in the past.

Kermiche had spent some time in detention after his second failed attempt, and was fitted with the tag. He was only allowed to leave his home for a few hours a day.

The second man has not yet been identified.

The dramatic events unfolded after two men entered a church in the quiet town of St-Etienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, in the Normandy region of France.

They took the mass-goers hostage, preached in Arabic at the altar, and then killed 84-year-old priest Jacques Hamel by slitting his throat.

Both attackers were shot dead by police a short time later.

ISIS has since claimed responsibility for the atrocity, saying that two of its soldiers carried out the attack.
