Citizens in the south-eastern French city of Annecy rallied to support victims of Thursday’s stabbing attack that left four young children and two pensioners seriously injured, reports RTE.

The community held a rally in Le Paquier Park on the shores of the lake where the attack took place, to also honor those who tried to stop the attacker before he was overpowered by the police.

The mayor of Annecy, Francois Astorg, told the crowd that the attack was “a tragedy touching our city, the country and the whole world,” reports RTE.

“Our only choice is to respond with unity and hope… to choose the future rather than destruction. To gather is to build rather than hate,” Mr Astorg said, reports RTE.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron met with civilians who were hailed as heroes in the pursuit of the attacker from the playground where the stabbings took place.

The suspect, a Syrian refugee, is officially suspected of attempted murder and was detained in custody yesterday.

The injured are no longer in critical condition, but four children remain in the hospital.

The children, aged 22 months to 3 years, were initially taken to the hospital in serious condition, one adult was also seriously injured and another was injured, reports RTE.
