Four French men have been sentenced to death in Iraq, after they were found guilty of joining the Islamic extremist group ISIS.

According to BBC News, thd men named as Kévin Gonot, Léonard Lopez and Salim Machou, and Mustapha Merzoughi, were found guilty of joining the group at court hearings on Sunday and Monday.

It is understood the four men were captured along with eight others in Syria, by US forces.

The suspects who have become the first ISIS supporters from France to be executed, are expected to be killed by hanging.

Although the men are expected to appeal their sentence, their request to be tried in France was denied by judges earlier this year.

Following the sentencing the French Government, who have said that they are opposed to the death penalty in all places, said that those being detained in Iraq must be tried by the Iraqi justice system.

Meanwhile the French Ministry spokeswoman Agnès von der Mühll said: “France respects the sovereignty of Iraqi authorities” and noted that “terrorists must answer for their crimes in court.”
