From next month, playing the lotto will be more expensive, and the odds of winning big will worsen

The cost of playing the lotto is set to increase, and also two more numbers will be added to the panel, which means less chances of winning the jackpot.

From September, the price of two lotto lines will go up from €3 to €4.

And players will be forced to choose from 47 numbers, instead of the current 45. This effectively means that the odds of winning the jackpot increase almost to 11 million to one.

There will also be an increase in pay-outs for smaller winnings, including €100,000 for matching five numbers and the bonus ball.

According to Premier Lotteries Ireland, which took over the running of the lotto franchise ten months ago, the changes were “long overdue”.
