The newly appointed Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has claimed that the majority of banned drivers have not yet surrendered their driving licence.
Harris said that 9 out of 10 banned drivers haven’t given their licence into gardai.
Harris was speaking as new figures show around nine out of ten motorists who are banned have still not surrendered their licences.
According to RTE, some 83,000 drivers have been disqualified over the past eight years, while just 11% of them have surrendered their licences. The figure was as low as 7% in 2012. The rate was 13% last year.
