Garda investigation continues after woman is hospitalised after assault in Longford park

A woman in her 50s is recovering in hospital after being allegedly attacked in Longford Park at night, reports The Mirror.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances of an alleged incident that took place in the early hours of the morning at the Albert Reynolds Peace Park.

A large section of the walkway behind the park’s recreation complex, known locally as The Mall, was cordoned off this morning following the incident.

A Garda spokesman confirmed no arrests had been made and the investigation was ongoing.

Gardaí are investigating a robbery that occurred in the town of Longford in the early hours of Monday, August 7, 2023.

“A woman (50s) was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar to be treated for what is believed to be non life-threatening injuries. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward. Investigations are ongoing,” reports The Mirror.

Longford County Councilor Uruyemu Adejinmi said the incident shocked the local community and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“It’s terrifying to think an incident like this can take place in a place like The Mall,” she said. “This lady should have been safe in what is such a popular public place,” reports The Mirror.

Cllr Adejinmi requests anyone with information to help gardaí with their enquiries. “I would be asking those people to please come forward so that the assailant or assailants can be brought to justice as quickly as possible,” she said, reports The Mirror.
