Garda issue warning to public after thugs throw missiles at cars from motorway bridges

Gardaí have warned that a motorist could be killed after several missiles were fired at vehicles from bridges overlooking Irish highways recently.

In one case, a stone is believed to have been thrown from the M8 flyover outside Cahir in Tipperary and hit a passing car, damaging the windscreen, reports The Mirror.

The shocked driver saw a group of people on the bridge and managed to slow down before the accident.

After the object was thrown, they were able to safely enter the hard shoulder and inspect the damage.

Police have launched an investigation into the horrific attack that took place on February 26 and are believed to be examining CCTVs installed in the area in an attempt to identify the group, reports The Mirror.

Staff Sergeant Declan O’Carroll said: “Over the weekend gone by, there were incidents around the Cahir District. On Sunday evening a person driving on the M8 saw people on a bridge – these people then threw an item from the bridge which struck the windscreen causing damage,” reports The Mirror.

Over the years, a variety of missiles have been fired at motorists in counties such as Dublin, Cork, Wicklow and Meath.

In 2017, a woman claimed that three kittens were thrown from a moving vehicle on the M50 and killed by oncoming traffic, reports The Mirror.
