For the third time in its 100-year history, the Gardai have updated the uniform used by all Gardai, Sergeants and Inspectors.  The uniform for senior officers from Superintendent up to Commissioner remains the same.

According to RTE, the new uniform will involve polo shirts, two-tone soft shell and waterproof jackets and operational trousers.  For the first time the Garda crest badge will be used on the uniform.  Shirts and ties are out, except for formal occasions, but the peaked cap remains.

The new uniform was developed in response to requests from frontline gardai for a new uniform that would be very practical.  The Gardai had previously adapted some aspects of the uniform to take account of head gear worn by Gardai from various religious backgrounds.

It is expected that a “go-live” date for the new uniform will be announced in the next few weeks.
