Gardai are resigning hand over fist for abuse, stress, bullying and work hours

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) says more and more GardaĆ are resigning from their jobs due to low morale, bullying, unfair treatment and work-related stress, reports RTE.

So far this year, 106 officers have left the organization, which is the same number as last year and more than twice as many in 2017.

The GRA’s findings were published in a report based on interviews with 40 police officers who left the organization last year.

Garda Headquarters stated that the issues raised were under Garda’s control and were being resolved, but the attrition rate was 1% of Garda staff.

The GRA said police work in An Garda SĆochĆ”na was “a worrying work culture where bullying, mental stress, burn out, and a sense of vulnerability are rife”, reports RTE.

The association interviewed 40 officers who left the organization last year and described feeling underappreciated and overworked.

All described morale within the Garda organization as low.

GRA chief executive Brendan O’Connor said he was “somewhat taken aback” by the findings and that it was now up to Garda management to heed the red flags and warnings contained in the study.
