
Over the Bank Holiday weekend, over 3,000 drivers were caught speeding, while 187 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to figures released by gardaÃ, reports RTE.
One driver was taken into custody after being recorded at a speed of 181km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 in Ballynamone, Co Kilkenny.
In Donadea, Co Kildare, gardaà apprehended a motorcyclist who was travelling at 122km/h in a 60km/h zone, reports RTE.
On X, gardaà revealed that the motorcyclist was a learner and had been operating without tax or insurance for nine years.
In another incident in Dublin, a learner motorcyclist was caught driving at 129km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road, without the required L tabard, reports RTE.
The garda traffic enforcement campaign ran from 7am on Thursday, May 1st, until 7am this morning.
During that time, authorities issued over 270 Fixed Charge Notices to drivers for mobile phone use behind the wheel; 340 to unaccompanied learners, and 115 for failing to wear seatbelts, reports RTE.
A total of 147 vehicles belonging to unaccompanied learner drivers were seized, along with 444 others for lacking tax or insurance.
Two fatalities were reported in separate road incidents during the holiday period, reports RTE.
In Frenchpark, Co Roscommon, a woman in her 80s was fatally struck by a truck at the junction of the N5 and R361 on May 1st, while in Coolock, Dublin, a man in his 60s died in a crash yesterday evening.
Six individuals sustained serious injuries in road collisions over the weekend, reports RTE.
