Gardai investigate WhatsApp messages about female officers

A Garda anti-corruption unit is investigating the circulation of internal WhatsApp messages between officers containing false allegations and information about two female officers, reports RTE.

Assistant Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon told police authorities this afternoon that “false, insensitive and inaccurate” messages have been circulated which she described as “very offensive and hurtful”, reports RTE.

Deputy Commissioner McMahon said it was “completely unacceptable” for any member of the force to think it was “okay” to treat a colleague in this way.

The victim, she said, was in a “helpless and hopeless situation”, reports RTE.

The deputy commissioner said gardaí did not know how many people were involved but an investigation had been launched to establish who composed and circulated the messages.

The chairman of the police authority said that “there seems to be something out of alignment if a publicly funded device for policing duties can be used and the veil of secrecy and right to privacy used to transmit messages of this kind”, reports RTE.
