After the horrific attack on two elderly Cork siblings over the weekend, gardai have moved to reassure the elderly that they shouldn’t be scared and that burglaries are on the decrease.

According to RTE, Assistant Commissioner Hilman said  burglaries have decreased and the elderly should not be afraid.

“We know burglaries have decreased and we know that older people are no more likely to be a victim of burglary than any member of society,” she said.

“But that said, I very much recognise that there can be that fear of crime and we want to reach out to people to reassure them,” she added.

“Gardaí are committed to carrying out thorough investigations and will follow up all lines of enquiries and, if anyone has any information about any burglary, I would ask them to pass that to us,” she added.

Meanwhile, an 84-yr-old woman who was held with a knife at her neck along with her 79-yr-old brother says they were both terrified during the hour-long ordeal, during which a robber threatened to stab them if they didn’t give him cash.

The thief also cut the phone line and removed light bulbs from fixtures in the house during the incident.

Mary O’Halloran, who is recovering at her home in Ballyphehane after being released from hospital, said it was a shocking experience for both of them.

Ella’s brother Gerry de Ella is still being treated at Mercy University Hospital following the traumatic incident in which a masked man threatened them with a knife at Gerry’s home on Boyce’s Street in Gurranabraher in North Cork.

The thug made off with cash but thankfully neither sibling was badly physically injured.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the siblings and raised a very fetching amount of money for the pair.
